ZH's choir performance - Sempre Crescente 2013

The jellyfish is back! :D

On this very auspicious day of my FOM exam (final paper liao), PJC Choir held a performance at SOTA to showcase the ever improving / ever growing team.

Such an opportunity should not be missed! Therefore me, SY, Tean and RJ bought some tickets to listen to the delicate voices of the young Pioneers, appreciate the beauty of such fine arts and perhaps even get mesmerized into a new dimension of glass-breaking music...

Ok fine, the glass-breaking is a joke, and so are the other few descriptions. We went there just to support ZH. I think most of the audience went to support their friends / bf / gf, not to listen to some glass-breaking music from War's Era. =/

So yup, posting about PJ's Choir Night: 'Sempre Crescente 2013'. :)

==========

1900hrs

Does anyone know the significance of giving flowers to the people whom you support on stage? They look splendid, and brings out the beauty in the performances (or the people themselves), but I have no idea why flowers. I would have thought gifts would be more appropriate, but ah oh well, people who don't usually go for performances would not be familiar with these cultures. =P Apparently, me, Tean and SY are not the only supporters. Besides RJ, ZH brought 2 of his FASS girl_friends to the performance too, and they bought for him a yellow flower. Ah, maybe its the opposite genders would buy the flowers, how sweet. :)

1915hrs

RJ and the girls went in to SOTA first. SY arrived shortly after, and we sort of stoned and looked at the guests. Not as many as I thought, but still many who went in wore quite smartly, with handful of gifts and bouquet of flowers... Saw 2 teachers from the Chem dept, forgotten their names. =/ The night scene at The Cathay is rather beautiful, everybody wants some enjoyment after a tiring week at work / school. :D

At least for me la, my exam just finished...

1929hrs

Tean arrived! (1h+ journey taking 190) We quickly got into SOTA, passing by the Dedications / Gifts booths. Should have used the waiting time to write a few lines for ZH. Aiya sian. =/

The SOTA concert hall is quite an elegant one. With wooden floors and walls, it gives quite a grand feeling that definitely looks nicer than normal school halls. Since our tickets were slightly more expensive, we got the seats nearer to the stage. $2 more, it seems more worth it than to sit at the top deck. SOTA has rather strict rules though:

1. Lateness is not allowed. If an act is in progress, nobody would be allowed entry. (If ask Nat then I think half the performance don't need watch liao)
2. No picture taking / video taking is allowed. Not even for memory sake.
3. Silent mode for all electronic devices. (duh)

The brochure of programme details looks rather boring, until the part where we saw ZH's name! Apparently he was the one who designed(?) the tie/bowtie for the performance dresses. FASS must be really quite slack ah, still got so much time to do these kind of things. O_O

1940hrs

Official start of the performance. There were 4 emcees who addressed the audience. One of the guy emcee had a si bei fake slang, probably that is needed in a performance like this. They began introducing the choir, the history and how it has improved bla bla bla... Maybe the younger generation is more talented in music, since the parents would be quite kiasu to let them learn all kinds of nonsense, that's why some of them must have a really good voice. You need people like this to go sing in KTV. :D

The 1st half consisted of short random songs consisting of many different languages. There is a main conductor which leads the entire choir, featuring specific singers at different parts of the songs where a 'Solo' would be performed (probably about 20 seconds). For some short songs, a student / alumni would be the ones who composed the song, and thus they would conduct the song themselves on The Edge Of Glory. Power sia, none of them broke their voice / failed at a high note in the solo performance, that must have took a lot of hard work!

ZH is definitely one visible guy in the Choir! He is tall, and thus his positions are either at the tallest row, or at the front row (in front of all the steps). The super bright spotlights must have made him hot... Someone should turn the intensity down! Ah anyway, we watched the random singing for the next hour. Didn't really appreciate what they are singing, since I was mostly stoning / observing SY laughing at minor things randomly / answering P&C questions from Jessica (shun bian say her cousin performing).

Some parts of the singing (vague memory) went like this...
- Singapura Sai, Singapura plaza, Singapura Plaza Singapura Plaza... (very fast singing)
- Some song that is perfect for horror / thriller films.
- Some Lullaby song which a baby would cry by listening.

And I said oh my, what a Marvelous Tune... ~.~

2035hrs

15mins Intermission. A short break from all the singing and hearing. Finally talked to Tean properly after what seemed like months. He seemed to be having a good time in Computer Engineering, except for maths and physics. Computer people seemed to have a very neutral view about the dangers of hacking, to the extent that it sounds biased in favour of hacking.

Tean: "Actually Hacking is not a bad term. It just means to change the computer programming code to do what the programmes want, into their own computers or to other computers..."
Jeff: Alamak hacking la.
Tean: Yeah... (Eh?)

This contradicts the fact that hacking is bad. You see la, all computer science people must have changed codes too much already lol. Imagine if I could learn hacking 2 years later through the Optimization code. =P Also dunno what to do with that skill!

2045hrs

2nd half of the performance. The medleys.

Medley: Phantom Of The Opera
Medley: Les Miserables

These 2 are the longer performances (about 10+ mins each). The choir sang the song very well (songs of angry men), but the pianist is super awesome! For such a long song and being able to play the tune so well without a hitch, the endurance level must be extremely high. :D I think I enjoyed the piano piece more compared to the singing.

The performance ended with giving flowers to the conductor and the Principal, followed by an ending 'bonus' song. With that, concludes the end of the full Sempre Crescente, alongside with girls shouting their dedications to whoever performed on the stage. :)

2140hrs

After the performance, we waited for ZH to be dismissed from the whole event. William happened to passby(?) SOTA, so he joined us in waiting for ZH. He seems to be doing well, from the way he said that his painting could be sold for a few thousand dollars. Hmm.

The 2 girls of RJ / ZH looked rather normal. Just hear them disturbing one another about clubbing / who is ZH's gf / ZH liking wild girls (lolwut).

Girl 1: (Points to Girl 2) You know hor, this is ZH's girlfriend.
(All stare at Girl 2)
Jeff: Oh ok... Yeah it's about time ZH had one.
Girl 1: ^^
Girl 2: I am NOT his girlfriend!!!

Aiya sian, almost made me believe ZH has one. =P

2210hrs

The choir team is finally released! Somewhere at a far corner, there approached another girl who looked for ZH and give him a red rose. A moment of silence fell within the group, as the 2 girls looked kinda sad... Wonder who that mysterious girl is, skali that is the ACTUAL gf. :D After ZH, RuiQin, ZH's mother and the girl took a (family?) photo, RQ and his mother left, and ZH took some photos with us. Here's a combined group photo.

Top [BP]: Tean, SY, Jeff, ZH (tall right!), William, RJ
Bottom [NUS]: RJ (alamak appear again), ZH (still tall!), Girl,Girl

The big yellow flower nice right? =P

==========

It's getting late and thus it's time for me to go home. The rest\{Tean} had dinner. ZH mentioned that he didn't design the tie / bowtie, he just ordered it. That's still worth a mention in the brochure though!

An eventful night. Here's what everybody obtained.

SY / Jeff / Tean / RJ / Girl / Girl: Wah ZH perform siol.
ZH: 1 rose + 1 big yellow flower + lot of memories and photos + chance for gf (the mysterious girl).

~~

$17. Worth it for the concert? Yeah, You Only Support Once! :D
Marginal contribution of ZH to the concert: $17.

That's about it for the night! :)
