Berny's 21st function/party

The jellyfish is back!

"Hey Jeff, I am hosting a birthday party and inviting primary school people to come for my party also. It will be great if you can join in, and catch up with the old times..." - Berny

So yup! This isn't a common birthday celebration to attend, but hey, why not see if I can still recognise the past primary school classmates. Met up with War at lot 1, to sort of know what we're doing in the party, some tips to avoid awkward questions (do u still rmbr me!?) and... gift wrapping. ._.

So there's War, holding a scotch tape, and holding a brown carton box in another hand, which remarkably looks like the kind of boxes we would see in Avarto. Well, I can say that it's nicely packed. The brown colour looks original, it has no ugly scratches / dents, and it definitely shows that it's sort of imported from somewhere. I can't say mine is better! Wrapped in white paper, and some scotch tape from War, some would say that using newspapers would be a much better option, but ah who cares. Bought something nice for Berny, which somehow feels like it's a more expensive present than I would buy for anyone else. I should change this fact in the future. :)

Seeing that it's still early, we bought some ice-cream / milkshake from Mac before going over to Northvale. It's War's first time drinking a milkshake, and he commented that it tasted just like melted ice-cream, which is rather true. A mango flavour burst (which kinda tasted like Orange) for me, and nice imagined scenes / experiences of avoiding eye contacts, how to avoid people who remembers you, and ways to get out of uncomfortable situations. A really good laugh before going in the Condo~

Just as we're about to enter, we saw Benedict, who was holding a really nice and fashionable paper bag which holds Berny's awesome gift. Went in together, and only to realised that the party is held in a function room, with MANY guests which definitely don't look like people we know from UPS, and some are even wearing a rather formal attire, including Berny. Our first thoughts of Berny wearing Office attire is that he just knocked off from work, and thus didn't have time to change as he need to help out in this event. Ah whatever is that, we passed our gifts right after Benedict gave his (malu sia), and then looked around at the dishes...

Next up, we left the function room and walked for 1 big round around the condo. Chatting, looking at cats, trying to remember the names of the primary school people. I realised that it's one of the rare times which I have seen War but not WL, and it's kinda boring. If only WL is present, he could act like as if he's one of the 6D people, and then asked people: "eh you don't remember me? I'm Wen Long!" Then look at the rest of the class people looking stunned and acting: "oh yeah i tink i have seen you before..." XD

After what seems like a 20 minutes walk, we went back to the function room and took a bit of catered dinner. It's rather not bad, I took a bit of sweet and sour fish, mashed potatoes, fried rice, oglio oglio (??) pasta, sweet dark sauce chicken, etc... Well, the side dishes tasted quite all right, esp. the mashed potatoes! The main carbo dishes tasted... Well not exactly to my liking, but generally it's still quite ok though! We sat on a random bench near the swimming pool, munching on our dinner, talking about NS lives, the wayangs and things done for the stupid officers, commanders~ Education and ranks, about how they are not exactly very dependent on each other, and why some people should have a higher rank despite their low education~~~

Oh, there's a gym in the middle of nowhere, I wonder why can't the gym be built at the ground level, isn't it more convenient to build at a lower level instead of giving the workout people a pre-warm up by going up to the gym? =P Someone should build a sky swimming pool like the one in Oblivion. :D

The guys from 6D have sort of arrived, and somehow it's the group which I have expected. Chester's and Berny's gang. =P So yep, the turnups: Chester, Bork Hang, Benedict, me, War, Kun Da and Kun Yun, anybody else I missed out? So with this, it seems like all my thoughts of 'what happens if I don't recognise somebody' seem to vanish instantly as I knew everybody, even though the twins is still very difficult to differentiate.

Everybody generally looks the same! Well, at least for facial looks and expressions.

Benedict: Definitely has the same look. Did he even change!?
Kun Da/Kun Yun: Seen them in PJ
Berny: Seen him in PJ
Bork Hang: Seen him a few months ago at KTPH, while he's on his attachment.
War: Aiya, see so often siol.

Chester changed somewhat! It must have been a super super long time since I have seen him! He has really grew much taller (War what happened??), his voice grew really much deeper and one look, you can see that he has a built-up figure. Yeah, that resulted in Benedict disturbing Chester upside down with references that strangely sound like Chuck Norris and Hulk. Haha, gone were the days when Chester was playing around, in his kid voice. 9 years have flied by.

Since that is about all for the turnup from 6D, the topic turned into remembering the girls and your group of friends in the class. Strangely I don't really remember the girls, perhaps except for JieTing (aunty), Yun Hui (the prefect), and Liling (yeah, somehow remember). There are a few Malay girls being mentioned which I have forgotten, er Sarah and Farah remembered as the girl pair of twins. Did anyone remember a quiet girl called Joyce? Somehow nobody mentioned her...

Group of friends. I somehow got the impression that my group consisted of Jason, Guan Wei and Guang Wei, only to realise that I have forgotten whether that was in P5 or in P6. Oh, another 2 facts which I have forgotten.

- Benedict was a prefect. (Seriously, he doesn't look like!)
- Berny was the class monitor. (Hmm, suits him.)

2000

So the so called 'party', isn't exactly a party after all...

At around 8pm, there's a very weird presentation about health products, for enhancing beauty and offering alternatives for common products. Well. I don't think any guy from Berny's MP friends or the group of us had actually understood or listened to the presentation, but stayed on to give face to Berny. There's something about saving $770 per month, and photos of Walmart, and nothing else I remembered. >.< There's a practical demonstration of some cleaning detergent, which the chem students didn't find it very entertaining.

Oh, the woman who presented asked about shopping of online goods, and that is when I realised I had actually not bought anything online, except for Mac/KFC/Pizza Hut delivery~ Well, maybe I just don't trust online transactions, or I just don't have a credit card, but I just don't really like online shopping. You can't check the goods, the quality may not be up to your expectations, and after looking at production side packing the goods, well perhaps it's better to go to a retail outlet and check it out myself. =/

5 minutes before 8.45pm (official cake cutting), Berny had a slideshow featuring his 21 years of growing up. Quite interesting, the slideshow focused somewhat on his NS and teenage life, so baby-photo lovers would not be really interested / fascinated / awed by the video~~

AL's Here's to never growing up. The slideshow had a random song, which I have no idea what is it. Perhaps this would be a better song to use~ I am never a fan of Avril, but hey this song sounds really not bad and not as noisy as her other songs. :)

I didn't drink any red wine, War enjoyed it though. If WL turned up, he would be finishing the bottles like water.

2045: Cake cutting and photo taking!

As strange as it seems, the closest event which I would relate from the point Berny officially celebrated his birthday is Zhen Wen / Danny's wedding. O_O

Berny's cake is extremely huge! If you can unstack the layers of a typical multi-layer wedding cake and instead place it on a particular plane, you still cannot guarantee that the area is bigger than Berny's cake. A really huge chocolate cake which doesn't really have any fanciful original designs, enough to make kids exclaim in delight and girls to shout 'OMG SO SINFUL'. =P

The picture taking is far more elaborated than I thought. Initially, I thought that it will just be a birthday cake, with a birthday song, and Berny would just walk around, mingle with the guests and perhaps take a shot or two with whoever is interested to take with him. In the end, it turned out that his birthday shots (not the alcohol) follow just like the wedding procedures (or even worse). Photos with father's side, mother's side, relatives, bla bla bla, friends from Pri sch, friends from Upper Sec, friends from Lower Sec, friends from MP... Someone should give Berny a break siol.

The cake tasted rather nice, which War disliked (he didn't makan any cake since 9 years old). Nothing much happened after that. We took an informal photo with some weird looking props, and exchanged phone numbers for future contacts. :)

*Side note: I changed my number the next day.* =P

=====

That's about it for Berny's birthday party. Well, I must say that it's really quite a unique event, I will never do that, it's too er... extended. To me, an ideal celebration will be one where a few people just hang out with you, perhaps talk about life, and those people must be the ones you really know. :) Ah, different choices, different perspectives. Happy birthday Berny! =D
